(He was born as most stars were, out of a great cloud of dust and light. He remembered playing with other stars, racing through the wide-open expanse of space. He was raised to be one of the brightest stars in the sky, shining brightly and vividly for all the world to see, and he did his best to follow these rules. He wanted to be a beacon in the night sky, he wanted to be bigger and brighter than those orbiting around him, and he burned accordingly.)
Cepheus was born as an alpha's son in a distant land, named for the golden speckling in his coat that made it seem as though he had fallen down from the heavens themselves. He was part of an unusually large litter that year, but he was seen as the one with the most potential, the one that would serve to take over the pack from his aging parents one day, and they were quick to model him accordingly. They accepted nothing less than perfection from him, often being quick to dole out punishments should he not act in the way that was expected of a future alpha, and though Cepheus was often left feeling as though nothing he ever did would serve to impress them, he learned to put his head down and go along with their plans. If he attended his studies, if he practiced his combat skills dutifully enough, and if he composed himself with all the grace and dignity that was expected of him, then he was properly doing his job. Then he would be acknowledged, and praised as a shining star like himself should be. Though he yearned to race through the wide open expanse of their territory like all of the other pups in the pack, though he yearned to be free from boring lessons of etiquette and morals, Cepheus knew that these were the cards he had been dealt in life. He would simply have to go along with them the best that he could, and model himself according to what his parents and everyone else in his pack expected.
(Life as a star was lonely, so very lonely. There were times when there was nothing but the blank expanse of space to keep him company, when even the fact of how brightly he shone through the blackness wasn't enough to keep him fulfilled. But then another came along- a comet, blazing through the sky, captured by his orbit and zipping by. The comet promised him a life of adventure and grandeur if he'd simply leave behind his duties as a star for a day or two. The comet said that it could teach him how to breathe life into the void that surrounded him. And the star agreed, for he was curious, and he danced off after the comet's tail, following it wherever it chose to go.)
Try as he might, Cepheus went about his days feeling frustratingly ostracized from the rest of his pack, bored with his days of strict routine and lesson after lesson to attend to. He also did not find himself feeling the stirrings to mate with females that other males in the pack did as he grew into sexual maturity, leaving him truly wondering if there was something wrong with him, if it was his lot in life to be lonely and miserable for the rest of his days. It was then that Destin came into his life. A yearling who was the son of a lower-ranking couple within the pack, Destin was a proper little hellfire in his youth, bouncing from place to place without a care in the world and always looking for the newest adventure on the horizon. The others in the pack turned their nose up at such an attitude- such blatant disregard for the standards of society could not be something that was smiled upon, after all- but Cepheus found himself becoming fascinated by it. Destin seemed to embody everything that he could have been had he not been born into his particular circumstances, everything that he desperately wanted to be, and he found himself drawn to the other male not unlike a moth would be drawn to a flame. And as it turned out, when he finally had the courage to approach Destin and confess his feelings, the other yearling revealed that they were very much mutual. Destin had been just as fascinated by this alpha's son who seemed to have starfire trapped within his pelt, and was quick to extend his affection towards a wolf who had been so very lonely until then.
"Come on, starlight," he'd tease Cepheus, when they snuck out from another lesson to attend to some new adventure. "Live a little. I think you'd be pleased with the results, don't you?" Cepheus would act mock-offended until Destin tugged at his ear affectionately, covering his face and neck in playful licks, and then they'd romp with each other until the day was done, stopping only to make sweet and delicate love to each other in the long grass. They were in love, and happy, and so very very content.
(The star loved the comet. He would have followed the comet anywhere, let his light dim out just so they could be together, if only the comet had said the words. But the rest of the stars did not appreciate the fact that this star was abandoning his duties. When he should have been shining bright to fill the void of space, he was missing, and his light was dimmed. They shrieked and raged and burned, and in the end they caught the comet, tore its rocky core to shreds and cast its great glittering tail back into the expanse. And the star screamed, and screamed, and burned, but he could not stop it from happening, all he could do was sit in the sky and mourn and remember that the comet had told him to never stop being special-)
The pack found out, of course, because they'd always bothered to keep close tabs on Cepheus, what with him being the alpha's son and therefore more liable to be threatened or captured should the neighboring packs decide to invade. When they caught wind of the fact that their beloved heir was daring to be more affectionate than he should have been towards a member of his own sex- something which was seen as the ultimate sin in their pack life- they raged, disgusted over the fact that Cepheus could have stooped so low, that this troublesome yearling had served to corrupt him in such a way. Seeking to make an example of Destin and remind Cepheus of why this behavior was not permitted in turn, they caught the two while they were in the process of making love to one another, dragging them to the central clearing where most pack gatherings took place. Destin tried to courageously fight them off- all the while Cepheus screamed and pleaded with him, begging for him to not do anything foolish- but their sheer numbers quickly overwhelmed his mate. Broken and bleeding, Destin managed to drag himself forward just long enough to look into Cepheus's eyes, smiling the same crooked and mischievous smile that he always had- but now bloodied and fractured. "Never let them forget how special you are, starlight," he wheezed out, with every last breath left in his body. "Promise me." And though Cepheus pleaded with him to stay alive, pleaded with him to not leave him all alone again, Destin perished at his feet, the smile still staying fixed to his maw even in death.
(The star raged, but he could not stop the other stars from punishing him, from carving out huge chunks of his fiery surface and then casting him down to the cold, unforgiving earth. He smashed into the Earth then, and it was dark and cold, and everything ached-)
Something within Cepheus snapped then. Outraged over his lover's death and uncaring of what happened to him, he surged forward, intending to make all of them feel the same level of pain that he did in that moment, intending to shed as much blood as he could until Destin's death had been avenged. But he was not experienced in combat either, and they tore into him in turn, bloodying and scarring him until it was almost certain that he would die of blood loss if they were allowed to torment him any further. Thinking that he would surely die from his wounds sooner or later, his pack then tossed his prone form into the ocean while he was still too weak to protest, eager to be rid of this dark chapter in their history. Due to the rough handling, Cepheus drifted out to sea- but not before hitting his head on one of the large rocks that dotted the shoreline, causing him to momentarily black out and sink below the waves.
(The star awoke in the debris of his fall. Though he could not remember the exact details of why he had been cast out, or who the comet was- even its gender was lost upon him- he saw the gold dappling upon his new and feral form, saw the star-like scar upon his head, and knew his purpose. He had been sent to these strange lands to redeem himself so that he might be able to join his brethren in the sky again, and he would do all in his power to ensure that such a thing came to pass.)
Cepheus awoke on the shores of Anikira, somehow managing to have not drowned in the sea's waves but missing most of his memory. Seeing his dappled coat and a scar in the loose shape of a star-like diamond upon his head- as well as vaguely remembering the term 'starlight'- he came to the conclusion that he must have been a fallen star, his mind broken by both Destin's death and the tumble into the sea. Convinced that he would have to commit himself to doing enough good deeds that he would be accepted back into the heavens again, Cepheus set out in an effort to ascertain just where he was and what his purpose was to be, all the while having no idea of just how much of his past life he had forgotten.
Cepheus is, first and foremost, a wolf that holds himself to an impossibly high standard of perfection. Though his memories of his past are few and far between, the golden son can still vaguely recall that he was expected to be perfect even in his youth, and is often keen to both act accordingly and encourage such standards in others. One could almost call him vain, with his immaculately-groomed coat and impeccable manners (as well as his rather formal way of speaking), or perhaps even self-centered. But the fact remains that Cepheus is, deep down, a male so terrified of failure that he tries to lessen any example of it in his life. Having never been taught that mistakes were simply an excuse to learn and improve rather than something to be punished, the slightest amount of noticeable error in his actions is almost guaranteed to send the male into an anxiety-fueled frenzy, one which will only be abated when he either manages to find some solution to the problem or when another individual steps in to help calm the situation. He has a set standard of morals that he holds himself to as well, and expects everyone around him to do the same, regardless of how practical it would be for them. Cepheus is also a wolf driven by his need to constantly be working and improving himself- it is rare that you will find him sitting still at all, and should he fall into a period of inactivity in his life the young male will often work tirelessly to find some solution to it.
Cepheus also- though he does not yet recall the reason for it- detests any kind of physical violence directed his way. Though he is a capable fighter and would be more than capable of defending himself should a particular social situation suddenly escalate into a fight, even the tiniest hint of such a fate befalling him will cause him to cower and beg for any semblance of mercy nine times out of ten. The violence of his past and his fractured mind have combined to turn him from someone who could have been a capable warrior to someone who becomes shell-shocked at the first sight of blood or injury, and who will vehemently speak out against any violent acts that appear around him in the rare occasion that he is not found fleeing as far away as he can. Not possessing a single adventurous bone in his body, Cepheus is also not overly fond of taking unnecessary risks in his life, or being bolder than his normal lifestyle requires him to be. He is quite content to stay within his safe little 'bubble' of normalcy until he is forced out of it by some condition or another, and often needs quite a bit of coaxing to attend to a more dangerous task when finding himself part of a group. This is not to say that Cepheus is incapable of facing danger, or of speaking up for himself- far from it, in fact- but in his current brain-addled state, he often needs reassurance that it is the right thing to be doing, and will likely endlessly analyze the situation beforehand to reassure himself that things will ultimately work out should it suddenly go south.
Though his odd behavior and delusions as a result of his fractured mind can seem intimidating or even threatening to the average wolf that wanders Anikira, Cepheus is far from incapable of being kind to any company that happens upon him, even if he does tend to be rather quiet and reserved even at the best of times. Though it takes him time to truly open up to strangers, Cepheus is unceasingly loyal once an individual manages to earn his trust, willing to follow them anywhere should they also extend their trust in turn. He tends to get along more easily with females than males at the moment- an unfortunate side effect of his mind sub-consciously trying to keep him from being harmed by a romantic bond again- but has no qualms towards showing the proper amount of respect towards female figures in his life, never coming anywhere close to viewing them as objects or downplaying their achievements. The male also has a wicked (if not slightly morbid) sense of humor when prodded to show it, and a great love of debate and philosophical discussions. Due to both his name and the belief that he is a fallen star, Cepheus also holds a great amount of love for the heavens above, and can often be found studying the skies at night in an attempt to find new constellations within the inky depths.
Though he does not yet know why, Cepheus is a complicated tangle of emotions and thoughts at his present stage, often awakening in the middle of the night from violent nightmares that he cannot discern the meaning of. Ultimately, only time will tell if his mind will be able to slowly knit itself together to rid him of the complicated personality quirks that he currently holds.
